Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) incorporates education and practicing skills and shifts in mindset to support with managing intense emotions, relationships, and curbing intense urges that could lead to harmful behaviors. It incorporates skills focused on mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. There is a focus on dialectics which acknowledges that real life is complex and intense emotions exist while also centering on concepts of acceptance, daily practice of skills, and continuing to find healthy and supportive ways forward through the complexity.
Benefits of Dialectical Behavior Therapy
It allows us to explore the complexity of life, emotions, and experiences, while having concrete tools and mindsets as guides through difficulty. It also is a method that provides resources for safety and harm reduction when experiencing intense urges or emotions. It can provide a structure and support for people who may be looking for concrete steps and tools to utilize in their daily life between sessions.
What Does This Look Like in a Session?
Traditional Dialectical Behavior Therapy programs are led in a structured environment with individual and group components as well as homework. In our work together, I incorporate education on skills and mindsets from DBT as they are relevant for you. I also invite a practice of mindfulness during each session together as you are interested. I may provide suggestions or invitations for practicing skills in your daily life but will not give you official homework.
